Holiday decoration installation highlights risk of falls

As residents of the Toronto area begin to think about celebrating the winter holidays, they may pull out decorations for their homes. Some of those decorations could include exterior lights. The installation of these lights puts a focus on falls, which can lead to serious injuries.

According to a surgeon who works at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto, health care providers at the hospital are well aware that falls seem to be more prevalent around the holidays when people who do not normally spend time on the roof or ladders, get on them to decorate.

Of course winter is not the only time when people are hurt from falls. In fact, the Canadian Institute for Health Information indicates they actually result in more hospitalizations than accidents involving motor vehicles. In 2013-14, 10 percent of all people admitted to Canadian hospitals we there because of car crashes. In contrast, falls were responsible for 64 percent of hospital admissions in the country.

There are multiple types of injuries that someone who falls from a roof or ladder might experience. In addition to broken bones, spinal or brain injuries could occur. In some cases the injuries can be quite serious and call for extensive medical treatment. Such treatment is generally expensive.

In situations where someone falls as a result of negligence on the part of another, it is possible that damages could be sought to help offset some of that expenses. While cases of this nature can be complicated, those who are successful could find that it makes a big difference. A personal injury lawyer can be of assistance.
