What is the Ontario Training School Class Action?

Ontario training schools were government-run institutions intended to care for young people. Sadly, many residents experienced serious harm during their time there. 

The Ontario Training Schools Class Action seeks compensation on behalf of all individuals who suffered unsafe living conditions, neglect, physical or sexual abuse, solitary confinement, or other harm while residing at specific included provincial training schools.

On May 21, 2026, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved the settlement and thus claims for all qualifying individuals are considered settled. 

The claims process is now open. Qualifying individuals can submit a claim by September 22, 2027. 

Please note: official claims and settlement administration are handled through the court-appointed Administrator and Class Counsel, Koskie Minsky LLP.

Individuals who wish to opt-out of the settlement must do so before the Final Opt-Out Deadline of March 22, 2027.

How Claims Work Under the Settlement. 

The court-approved settlement allows eligible former residents to seek compensation through two claim tracks:

• Track 1 - for anyone who resided at a listed training school during the eligible periods and experienced general harm, excluding any abuse
• Track 2 - for anyone who experienced physical or sexual assault, or solitary confinement, on a range depending on the specific school, from 1953 to 1984. Compensation under Track 2 ranges from $7,500 to $100,000 depending on the nature and severity of the abuse suffered.
