Why must you opt-out and not opt-in to the Ontario Training Schools Class Action?

How Automatic Opt-In Works in Ontario.

In Ontario, class actions work on an "opt-in by default" basis. If you meet the class criteria, the system treats you as a qualifying member right away.

  • You are automatically "opted in," whether you know it or not.
  • This happens even if you never receive notice about the case.
  • It applies even if you did not know the class action existed.
  • It still applies if you are not ready to participate or talk about your abuse.

What Happens If You Stay In.

Staying in the Ontario Training Schools Class Action comes with terms you cannot change to fit your own experience:

  • You are bound to accept whatever compensation the class action offers, no matter the abuse you suffered or the impact it had on you.
  • If you do not apply for compensation by the claims deadline, you lose the right to seek any compensation at all.
  • If you do not opt-out, you cannot bring an individual claim, even if you miss the deadline to seek money from the class action claims funds.
