Dangerous Winter Driving - Tips

Default photo used for Dangerous Winter Driving - Tips

This winter has been a significant departure from recent winters in Southern Ontario. With freezing temperatures and lots of snow fall, the driving conditions have been horrendous! Even with four-wheel drive and snow tires on your vehicle you must be aware of the dangers that could potentially happen.

Fellow OTLA member Erin Ellis recently posted a blog article titled, Proceed With Caution-Extreme Weather Conditions Ahead! This article was published on the OTLA blog and it features safe driving tips for this winter season.

It is important to ensure that your car is prepared for the weather, but in addition you the driver must be capable of handling treacherous driving conditions.

Here are the tips that were outlined in the Erin's article,

  • Winterize your car, check your tires (consider winter tires if you haven't already), check your fluid levels, check the battery, and check your windshield wipers.
  • Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop.
  • Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
  • Keep your lights and windshield clean.
  • Be especially careful on bridges and overpasses, which will freeze first.
  • Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Four-wheel, all-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles are not exempt from the laws of physics and can encounter trouble on winter roads particularly if you're driving too fast!
  • Pack an emergency kit.
  • Wear your seatbelt.

Gluckstein Personal Injury Lawyers would like to wish you a safe winter season.
