Devastating Outcomes of TBI

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is understandably an extremely difficult adjustment to everyone affected the injured and those in their life.

Recently, Dr. Jeffrey Kreutzer spoke on TBI; he mentioned that the loss of relationships is one of the most devastating outcomes after suffering TBI. Relationships are essential to human happiness and when relationships are altered it has a negative impact.

Dr. Kreutzer created a short four minute video outlining TBI and relationships. In this video he explains many imperative and interesting facts regarding the misconceptions and confusions TBI victims suffer. It is important to understand how a victim changes after their injury. Dr. Kreutzer enlightens the audience, as he suggests most people do not fully understand the extent of what a victim is going through.

Furthermore, people have trouble seeing the injured person as changed, post injury, which ultimately strains relations, as they expect the same responses/personality pre-injury. Not only does Dr. Kreutzer outline the difficulties friends/family have when dealing with the changed injured individual, he also explains how the injured individual internalizes the changes in his/her relationships. More specifically, he summarizes how the injured individual has trouble dealing with the realization of why friends have suddenly abandoned them or changed themselves. Unfortunately, these feelings either communicated or not often lead to depression, which affects self-esteem and ultimately changes their view on relationships in general.
