Gluckstein Lawyers often meets people after the worst day of their life. An unimaginable tragedy has struck and left that person, or their loved one, with injuries so profound that their world has changed forever. At Nicholson Gluckstein Lawyers, our goal is to make a positive difference in our clients' lives. Whether it is as their advocate, developing guides to help support families and health care professionals, or merely a shoulder to cry on during a moment of need - we will be there. Our promise has always been offering full-circle care and support to those who walk through our door. Not only that, but we have also always believed that caregiving professionals should engage in self-care and self-advocacy. We extended this thought to our clients and all Ontarians who have suffered a debilitating condition or injury. As such, we have developed a series of manuals:

  • Managing your Recovery in Ontario: A Self-Advocacy Guide
  • Neurological Assessments: An Educational Reference Guide + Workbook for Catastrophic Designation
  • Caring for your Child with Special Needs: A Resource Guide

Due to the changes in the legislation for MVA and the passing of the responsibility for providing healthcare from the insurance company to the public sector, we realized that we had to give a resource to all Ontarians seeking access to medical intervention and services.

Managing your recovery: a self-advocacy guide

We understand that a sudden injury or illness can be overwhelming. Added to the stress is the uncertainty related to healthcare options. The guide provides a variety of helpful information to help the reader understand who funds health care and who is eligible for service and programs. We hope that it will assist you in decision-making about healthcare options. It includes information about everything from OHIP to The Trillium Drug Program, Community Care Access, Assistive Devices, Work Safe Insurance Board, Changes to Benefits following a car accident, to the instruction about Power of Attorney. There are eligibility criteria cited for all services and a reliable contact number provided at the bottom of each page. This guide aims to educate the reader by fostering an understanding of applicable rights and encouraging the reader to ask questions. Whether injured in a motor vehicle incident, at work or by the negligence of someone else's actions, the choices made can affect the rest of one's life. If you are a professional healthcare provider, please share this guide with associates and clients, to help them make informed healthcare options. Take the time to be aware of the rights and obligations that come along with healthcare choices. Ask questions of health care providers, lawyers, and insurance adjusters.

Neurological assessments: an educational reference guide + workbook for catastrophic designation

We have also developed a reference guide and workbook for Catastrophic Designation for clinicians and clients. Neurological assessments detect the presence of neurological disease or injury. These assessments monitor progression, determine the type of care needed, and gauge response to therapeutic interventions. Measuring one's recovery is an essential component for planning future care, establishing health care outcomes and securing insurance benefits. Assessment tools are regulated through the Ontario Insurance Act and are required through legislation to be completed by a qualified healthcare professional to determine funding access. This workbook contains the neurological assessment tools considered when evaluating for catastrophic assessment before and after the changes in June of 2016. This workbook aims to help the reader understand the medico-legal assessment and assist the claimant and healthcare professional through the documentation necessary to secure medical and rehabilitation benefits.

Caring for your child with special needs: a resource guide

Having a child diagnosed with a disability or a child who has sustained a life-altering journey can be difficult and challenging for many parents and families. Their visions of the future suddenly become starkly different than that which now lies in front of them. Children and youth with special needs require many services and interventions to improve their functioning, independence and long-term outcomes. Things like support services, funding programs, and assistive devices can increase their ability to participate fully at home, school and in the community. This guide will touch on the different services and funding options available and may help provide the best care and quality of life possible for your child. We hope that this guide will provide some necessary information to assist parents and caregivers with the information and knowledge they need to successfully advocate health care professionals, medical staff, lawyers, insurance adjusters, and government.
