Self-Advocacy in Ontario to Manage Your Recovery

Take Time for Self Care

Sometimes, the tiniest of ideas can become extremely meaningful and can result in life-changing actions. That is what happened with our concept of putting together a forum where healthcare professionals who care for others can come together for a day of personal development and information sharing. That tiniest of ideas exploded -- CARE4YOU Conferences and self-advocacy guides to assist us all to become better advocates of care.

Caring for those who care for others

Fourteen years ago, Françoise Mathieu, M.Ed., RP, CCC, was our first presenter. The success of that event spurred us to continue to sponsor these conferences for over a decade. We believe that by assisting others to engage in self-care - we all become better advocates.

Managing Your Recovery: A Self-Advocacy Guide

One tiny idea leads to another... we have extended our conviction that caregiving professionals engage in self-care and self-advocacy to our clients and all Ontarians who have suffered a debilitating condition or injury. We have developed a manual called "Managing your Recovery in Ontario: A Self-Advocacy Guide."

Due to the changes in the legislation for MVA and the passing of the responsibility for providing healthcare from the insurance company to the public sector, we realized that we had to provide a resource to all Ontarians seeking access to medical intervention and services.

We understand that a sudden injury or illness can be overwhelming. Added to the stress is the uncertainty related to health-care options. The guide provides a variety of helpful information to help the reader understand who funds health care and who is eligible for service and programs. It is our hope that it will assist you in decision-making about healthcare options. It includes information about everything from OHIP to The Trillium Drug Program, Community Care Access, Assistive Devices, Work Safe Insurance Board, Changes to Benefits following a car accident, to instruction about Power of Attorney.

There are eligibility criteria cited for all services and a reliable contact number provided at the bottom of each page.

The goal of this guide is to educate the reader by fostering an understanding of applicable rights and encouraging the reader to ask questions. Whether injured in a motor vehicle incident, at work or by the negligence of someone else's actions, the choices made can impact the rest of one's life.

If you are a professional healthcare provider, please share this guide with associates and clients, to help them make informed decisions about healthcare options. Take the time to be aware of the rights and obligations that come along with healthcare choices. Ask questions of health care providers, lawyers, and insurance adjusters.

Neurological Assessments: An Educational Reference Guide + Workbook

We were not finished with our tiny ideas.  This year we are in the process of developing a reference guide and workbook for Catastrophic Designation for clinician and clients. Neurological assessments detect the presence of a neurological disease or injury. These assessments monitor progression, determine the type of care needed, and gauge response to therapeutic interventions.

Measuring one's recovery is a very important component for planning future care, determining health care outcomes and securing insurance benefits.

Assessment tools are regulated through the Ontario Insurance Act and are required through legislation to be completed by a qualified healthcare professional to determine access to funding. This workbook contains the neurological assessment tools that are considered when evaluating for catastrophic assessment before and after the changes in  June of 2016.

The purpose of this workbook is to help the reader understand the medico-legal assessment and to assist the claimant and healthcare professional through the documentation necessary to secure medical and rehabilitation benefits.

Our Gluckstein Care Bear

Our tiniest of ideas came over two decades ago. We introduced the Gluckstein Bear.  As you can see, there was no accident that we selected the bear to be our mascot. Today we will introduce our newest bears - the cheerleader bears. An idea that began decades ago, has brought us thousands of smiles, messages, and photos. Our bears have been all over the world.
